Sherrie’s story is the kind that settles heavy in your chest and stays there.

She is a 14 year old mare, standing about 14.2 hands, but when her owners came back to see her, she looked so small it was hard to recognize the horse they once knew. They had leased her out to what seemed to be a good home, trusting that she would be loved and cared for the way she always had been. When they finally laid eyes on her again, their hearts broke. The bright, healthy mare they sent away was gone. In her place stood a quiet, tired shell of herself, ribs showing, eyes dull, spirit hanging on by a thread.

There are moments when love feels like failure, even when it isn’t. This was one of them. Her owners were devastated. We were devastated. No one could understand how such a sweet soul ended up like this. Sherrie never deserved neglect. She never deserved to be forgotten.

Despite everything she has been through, Sherrie has not lost who she is. She is still the kind, gentle girl who tries her hardest. With a carefully planned feeding program, she is slowly gaining weight. You can see the change beginning, little by little, though she still has a ways to go. Every pound she gains feels like a quiet victory, a promise that she is not done yet.

Under saddle, Sherrie is as soft and honest as they come. She rides smooth, safe enough for anyone, with a true more whoa than go way about her. Calm, steady, and forgiving, she carries her rider with the same patience she carries her own pain. She would make a wonderful trail horse, the kind that takes care of you as much as you take care of her.

Someone who will feed her, brush her, talk to her, and let her finally rest in the certainty that she is safe. Everyone involved in her story is heartbroken for her, yet hopeful. A $300 deposit will hold Sherrie for 7 days. This deposit is nonrefundable, but it is transferable to another horse if Sherrie does not work out for any reason. As Sherrie continues to gain weight and strength, her price will reflect that progress.
